How to Get Back In Shape After 35
My clients often tell me about how they used to be in such good shape... then life happened (marriage, kids, career, divorce, loss, illness, injury). Now they're feeling unhealthy, thick, uncomfortable in their own skin.
Then, something happens - and awakening of some sort - and they realize that it's time to make a change. And they're not sure how to get started.
Here's how to get and stay fit over 35.
Start in the Kitchen
Do you ever just want to blow your head off when someone starts talking about the “how to’s” of nutrition? Don’t worry, this stuff is simple! Because simple is sustainable. Simple is how we learn and simple CAN drive results.
Nutrition is the foundation of a healthy eating lifestyle. The most important part. If you are unintentional with your diet, you will not reach your goals.
A Healthy Eating Lifestyle Is Not Optional, It's Essential.
You are what you eat. It’s not just a catchy saying. If you eat terribly and you will feel terrible.
What is terrible food? Anything processed, anything that can sit on a shelf and still be eaten 4 years later. Eat real food. If this is a big change for you (or even a moderate change) you won’t even recognize how great feel.
Real food benefits: All the energy. Great sleep. Clear skin. No more stinky sweat. No heartburn. No bloating. No 4pm fog. Crazy right? This is what your body is designed to feel like. All. The. Time. We (humans) were built to be badass hunters - but now we just go to the store and purchase boxes of food.
You can still look like a badass pushing your cart around the store. You just need to put the right things in your cart (and in your body).
Ignorance is bliss: Once you experience the difference between terrible food and real food, you no longer have the excuse of not knowing what food does to your body, physically and mentally.
Workout to get the body you want.
Maintaining fitness after the age of 35 can seem like a challenge, but it's important to remember that it's never too late to start making healthy changes in your life. Just because you're not as young as you used to be doesn't mean you can't reap the benefits of fitness. In fact, research shows that being physically active can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. And, of course, fitness also comes with its own host of immediate benefits, like increased energy levels, improved sleep, and reduced stress.
There are plenty of ways to get fit after 35. You don't need to join a gym or start lifting weights; simply adding some bodyweight exercises to your daily routine can make a big difference. squats, lunges, push-ups, and sit-ups are all great exercises that can be done at home with no equipment needed. And there are plenty of other activities you can do to get your heart pumping, from taking a brisk walk or jog to playing tennis or joining a local sports team. No matter what you do, just remember that every little bit counts when it comes to fitness after 35.
